Cajon Grande's mountain hut
The Cajon Grande mountain hut is situated in the midle of the Andes, on the international summer road to Chile, close to the Pehuenche pass.
Veronica and Gabriel, the owners, stock 2 tons of firewood for heating. In the main house, they will prepare you Argentinian specialities such as “asado”, ”casuela”, ”guiso”, “tortas fritas”, “estofado” or home made local bread. You are in the wine province of Argentina. In the main room, you will find a lively and friendely atmosphere with basic home conforts, though it remains a mountain hut… however the amazing scenery and clear skies will make you want to stay on and on... Access: From Malargue, take the A40 South. Once in the village of Bardas Blancas, and having passed the Rio Grande river bridge, take the road heading West in the direction of the Andes, for another 40km. In Las Loicas, you will have to swap the car for a horse! Follow the valley to the Cajon Grande for 20km. The valley gradually grows wider and flatter and you will start to see snow. Here, you need to put on your skis and ascension skins and walk for about an hour to the shelter and warmth of the Cajon Grande mountain hut (2100m high). We take care of your luggage, and carry them to the hut using horses... (
